APPRECIATE: Seaweed – the secret ingredient stopping cows from burping methane.

APPRECIATE: Seaweed – the secret ingredient stopping cows from burping methane.

Aussie scientists at FutureFeed have created a seaweed-based supplement that reduces the production of methane in cows. Less methane = less burps = less potent greenhouse gas trapped in our ozone layer. Colossal win! If only 10% of the world’s cows consumed the supplement, it would be like taking 50 million cars off the roads. Basically, seaweed is a superhero and could be a huge player in the reversal of climate change – slimy little tendrils and all.

The supplement’s key ingredient is a species of seaweed called Asparagopsis, which is rich in a methane-quashing compound called Bromoform. It was trialled over five years with help from the CSIRO and is totally nutritious and safe for cows to consume. Unlike carbon, methane only stays in the atmosphere for 12 years, so there is potential for this new feeding method to erase all atmospheric damage caused by the livestock industry in the past.

With $13 million already secured from five big investors, the supply chain is currently in the process of being established. The product is set to be available in Australia in commercial volumes by mid-2021, and hopefully overseas soon after.

TRY: A picnic in the park made by your favourite cafe or restaurant.

TRY: A picnic in the park made by your favourite cafe or restaurant.

With the weather heating up and recent restrictions eased to allow for outdoor gatherings, there’s simply never been a better time for a picnic in the park. It’s also vital we support local business at the moment, so why not kill two birds with an alfresco lunch supplied by your favourite cafe or restaurant? We’ve compiled a list of eateries doing picnic packs right now, with everything on offer from brunch boxes to margarita jugs.

Moby
Like everything else they do, Moby have mastered the art of takeaway brunch. Their coveted brunch boxes are $50 for two people and $100 for four people. You get a coffee, a fresh juice, one main meal (think buttermilk pancakes or chilli scramble) and a choice of boozy add-ons like peach bellinis, bloody marys and mini prosecco bottles. We’ll take 12.

Radio Mexico
Beloved taqueria Radio Mexico are doing take away tacos, a ‘Dinner for Four’ pack and 1L jugs of margarita. The pack comes with a hearty selection of their most popular dishes along with an assortment of tasty sides – guac and corn chips included. Pre-order yours or grab a taco at the window and relish the flavours of Mexico down on the St Kilda foreshore.

Shop Ramen
If you’re a northsider with a penchant for home-style ramen – but you know the perils of ordering it takeaway – Shop Ramen have found a solution. Their DIY ramen kits allow you to concoct your soup at home with the utmost ease, ensuring it’s as fresh and flavoursome as when dining in. With everything from Pork Belly Shoyu to Organic Miso Tofu available, pre-order yours, assemble it in under half an hour and take it down to Edinburgh Gardens for Ramen in the park.

Bistro Gitan
For something a little bit fancy, treat yourself to a hamper from South Yarra institution, Hotel Gitan. $90 for a couple and $150 for a family, the hamper boasts a selection of their classic French-style dishes, reimagined for takeaway. Add a premium bottle of wine or a pack of craft beers and transport your feast across the road to Fawkner Park for the ultimate spring soiree.

Windsor Deli
While we’re all for mixing it up, we believe the quintessential picnic food is, in fact, a sandwich. The kitchen is open at Windsor Deli, where you can grab one of their famous gourmet sandwiches or something from the ‘Deli Dinner’ menu, a lockdown special. The dinners change weekly but meatball subs and loaded hotdogs have been known to feature. Don’t forget a hot cookie for dessert, or a cheeky slice of gluten-free cake.

REMEMBER: The beauty of your own backyard.

One thing the pandemic has made us appreciate is the beauty of our own backyard. When it comes to holidays, we tend to jet off to Queensland, Japan, Bali or Europe without checking what’s happening in good ol’ VIC first. It’s a shame because, upon closer look, we actually live in one of the most exquisite places on earth. Who knew! While there’s still a big old question mark over interstate travel, we’re embracing all things staycation.

By the ocean – Plenty Caravan, Apollo Bay
If you’re tickled pink by the idea of waking up to ocean views and Otway vistas, look no further than Plenty Caravan, Apollo Bay. Adorned in shades of pastel pink, the bespoke caravan has all the bits and bobs needed for a practical getaway – from a kitchenette to air con – complete with an outdoor antique bathtub overlooking the coastline. Nestled among the hills yet only 15 minutes from Apollo Bay shops, enjoy the ideal balance of seclusion and centrality.

In the bush – Eco Retreat, Callignee
Architecturally-designed, energy-efficient and totally off the grid, this sustainable masterpiece will make for an unforgettable weekend away. Built of recycled materials, the striking multi-level interior evokes a feeling of total sanctuary, encompassed by the lush bushland of Callignee, a secluded pocket of Gippsland. A 19 metre magnesium lap pool can be found at ground floor, perfect for those extra hot summer days.

Amongst wineries – The Dairy at Logbox, Red Hill
Tucked away in Red Hill South – a stone’s throw from breathtaking vineyards and Point Leo Beach – The Dairy at Logbox is as unique a destination as they come. A shabby-chic facade gives way to a luxe studio interior boasting ceiling beams, white timber joinery and stylish furnishings. Spend your day sipping world-class wines or exploring beachside trails before retiring to a quiet, rustic retreat.

On the farm – Alkira Eco-Glamping Retreat, Kallista
If you’d prefer a short drive, Alkira Eco Retreat is hidden away on an idyllic farm in the Dandenong Ranges, just 50 minutes from the CBD. The accomodation is surrounded by pristine vineyards and lush forests, allowing you to completely unwind among nature. Sleeping two, the cosy villa combines rustic brown walls, timber accents, soft linens and indoor plants, creating an atmosphere of total tranquility. For food, pre-order a picnic basket from Mrs Shmick and devour it on the fold out timber bar, overlooking horses and alpacas.
