By this time of year, summer has a different feel. The novelty of heatwaves has worn off, air-conditioning becomes non-negotiable, and sometimes the best plan is simply staying put. Enter the 90s ritual of parking yourself on the couch and letting a familiar theme song do the rest. Before streaming queues and endless choice, there was Seinfeld. Dry, observational and endlessly rewatchable. It’s the kind of comfort viewing that doesn’t demand attention, just rewards it. Perfect for those late-summer afternoons when the outside world can wait and doing very little feels exactly right.
10 lessons for the new year, courtesy of Seinfeld
1. Life is mostly made up of minor inconveniences.
Once you accept that, everything from queue etiquette to missing buttons becomes easier to survive.
2. Your social circle doesn’t need to be aspirational.
It just needs to show up, argue loudly and occasionally buy you lunch.
3. Overthinking ruins perfectly good situations.
The call was fine. The pause was normal. Let it go.
4. Comfort is underrated.
Whether it’s a couch, a routine or your favourite takeout, familiarity is not failure.
5. Small joys matter more than grand gestures.
A good sandwich, a strong coffee or a perfectly timed joke can save an entire day.
6. Not every opinion needs to be shared.
But if it is, commit fully and accept the consequences.
7. People are strange and that’s the point.
The quirks are what make the stories worth telling.
8. Plans will fall apart.
This is not a tragedy. It’s usually the episode.
9. You’re allowed to care deeply about trivial things.
Sometimes your coffee order really does matter.
10. Nothing has to mean anything to be enjoyable.
A wander around the city, rewatching a movie or parking yourself inside for the night can be reason enough.
