SIT || In the Prahran Plaza Carpark and envision yourself in the exact same place two years from now

Homeless people the city over rejoiced at Stonnington Council’s recent announcement that they would be turning the baron car parking space behind Prahran’s Coles into, Cato Village Park, a stunning new parkland that will: “set a new benchmark for innovative reclamation of urban open space in Australia”. Leading the design will be architectural firms, Lyons Architecture and Aspect Studios who forecasted that the $60 million, council funded project should be concluded by as early as 2019. Intended as a response to Stonnington’s surging population, the park has been conceived to relieve pressure on other public spaces nearby. With an estimated increase of 30,000 new residents by 2036 – 58 percent of which will be in the Chapel Street area – Stonnington has the second-lowest amount of open public space per capita of all Victorian council areas, the reclamation of this area sparks a shift in how our society is starting to approach communal interactions.
